At 2:30 p.m., a Hellfire missile came out of the sky and struck right in front of Nabila.

An 11 month old baby in France has died of malnourishment after being strictly breastfed by it’s vegan mother. The breast milk was lacking in vitamins B12 and vitamin A, which are mainly bioavailable in animal products.

Both parents have been convicted to serve five years in prison for neglect.

This is even worse than the time that 12 year old vegan girl from Scotland end up with rickets and the bones of an 80 year old due to a deficiency in vitamin D.

Vegans, please let this be a wake up call. If you’re concerned about animal cruelty in factory farms, buy meat and eggs from your local farmers. People who say there’s no such thing as ethical meat need to understand that there is a vast difference between a life lived on a farm and a life lived in a factory. If an animal lived a happy life up until it was killed, where is the fucking problem? Do you think that animal would have lived forever? Do you not think they would have been killed by some other animal for food if they had lived in the wild?

There is nothing wrong with assuming your position in the food chain and eating an animal if your health or life depends on it. A lot of supplements are not bioavalable, meaning the body doesn’t properly absorb them, and you should be getting most your nutrition from natural sources.

How many more babies need to die before you realize that your diet is not adequate?

Dear idiots,

“Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life-cycle including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.” - American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada

An expanded article.

This case, which happened back in 2011, was found to have centered specifically around parents who did not seek professional treatment for their child who was suffering from pneumonia, but instead chose to try and treat the child with alternative forms of medicine from a book they read, specifically they “treated her with cabbage and clay compressions.”

As for B12, my little genius nutritionists, it comes from bacteria. Found on the goddamn ground. Which would be eaten on the fruits and vegetables we pick and eat, and would even be in the water we drink, if we weren’t so obsessed with sanitizing everything so much that it kills even the good bacteria. Not only that, but it’s us who create B12 to begin with. In our intestines. Which we then absorb (source: 1999, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Elaine Nicpon Marieb). Not to mention, cooking actually destroys B12. It’s also found in fortified foods which includes everything from cereals and pastas, to plant based milks.

If you think blatant cruelty doesn’t exist on so-called “grass-fed” family farms, you are sorely out of touch. I grew up on family owned, small farms, and I can tell you with certainty that horrendous abuses occur there as a matter of standard practice. Others can tell you about similar experiences. And those “grass fed” farms still aren’t sustainable. (And “grass fed” and other feel good consumer terms are in quotes because these terms have little to no meaning in the industry, and come with even less, if any, regulation. They’re there to make you feel better and pay more.)

The problem is the commodification, exploitation, abuse, and killing of others for unnecessary reasons. The problem is the environmental destruction and exorbitant abuse and use of resources that surpasses almost any other industry in the world. The problem is the exploitation of people and their lands, which takes their food, clean water, and homes, just to feed the animals you eat. The problem is absolutely abhorrent conditions that the people who work in this industry endure. The problem is the wide-ranging negative effects of animal agriculture, which not only abuses and kills farmed animals, but is the cause of death for wildlife both directly and through displacement, including endangered wildlife, and is also the cause of some very serious problems for people as well, most directly, people who are poor, underprivileged, and railroaded by the animal agriculture industry, which makes its own laws - this one in particular meant to stop any further reforms towards how animals are farmed.

Yes there are people who do not eat well rounded diets, and that goes for vegans and non-vegans. The majority of supplements and vitamins are taken by non-vegans. The failure of some people to eat an adequately varied diet is not a failure of the vegan lifestyle. Unless of course we get to blame the failure of non-vegans’ ability to eat an adequate diet on the non-vegan diet.

The application of a tiny amount of common sense and a moderate amount of research would prevent idiotic fucking posts like this one.

Prison Labor Exposed: From Starbucks to Microsoft - A sampling of what US prisoners make & for whom
May 21, 2013

Tens of thousands of US inmates are paid from pennies to minimum wage—minus fines and victim compensation—for everything from grunt work to firefighting to specialized labor.

The breaded chicken patty your child bites into at school may have been made by a worker earning twenty cents an hour, not in a faraway country, but by a member of an invisible American workforce: prisoners. At the UnionCorrectional Facility, a maximum security prison in Florida, inmates from a nearby lower-security prison manufacture tons of processed beef, chicken and pork for Prison Rehabilitative Industries and Diversified Enterprises (PRIDE), a privately held non-profit corporation that operates the state’s forty-one work programs. In addition to processed food, PRIDE’s website reveals an array of products for sale through contracts with private companies, from eyeglasses to office furniture, to be shipped from a distribution center in Florida to businesses across the US. PRIDE boasts that its work programs are “designed to provide vocational training, to improve prison security, to reduce the cost of state government, and to promote the rehabilitation of the state inmates.”

And Each month, California inmates process more than 680,000 pounds of beef, 400,000 pounds of chicken products, 450,000 gallons of milk, 280,000 loaves of bread, and 2.9 million eggs (from 160,000 inmate-raised hens).Starbucks subcontractor Signature Packaging Solutions has hired Washington prisoners to package holiday coffees (as well as Nintendo Game Boys). Confronted by a reporter in 2001, a Starbucks rep called the setup “entirely consistent with our mission statement.”

Texas inmates produce brooms and brushes, bedding and mattresses, toilets, sinks, showers, and bullwhips.

In Texas, prisoners make officers’ duty belts, handcuff cases, and prison-cell accessories. California convicts make gun containers, creepers (to peek under vehicles), and human-silhouette targets.

A stitch in time: California inmates sew their own garb. In the 1990s, subcontractor Third Generation hired 35 female South Carolina inmates to sew lingerie and leisure wear for Victoria’s Secret and JCPenney. In 1997, a California prison put two men in solitary for telling journalists they were ordered to replace “Made in Honduras” labels on garments with “Made in the usa.”

Open wide: At California’s prison dental laboratory, inmates produce a complete prosthesis selection, including custom trays, try-ins, bite blocks, and dentures.

Constructive criticism: Prisoners in for burglary, battery, drug and gun charges, and escape helped build a Wal-Mart distribution center in Wisconsin in 2005, until community uproar halted the program. (Company policy says, “Forced or prison labor will not be tolerated by Wal-Mart.”)

On call: Its inmate call centers are the “best kept secret in outsourcing,” Unicor boasts. In 1994, a contractor for gop congressional hopeful Jack Metcalf hired Washington state prisoners to call and remind voters he was pro-death penalty. Metcalf, who prevailed, said he never knew.

Federal Prison Industries, a.k.a. Unicor, says that in addition to soldiers’ uniforms, bedding, shoes, helmets, and flak vests, inmates have “produced missile cables (including those used on the Patriot missiles during the Gulf War)” and “wiring harnesses for jets and tanks.” In 1997, according to Prison Legal News, Boeing subcontractor MicroJet had prisoners cutting airplane components, paying $7 an hour for work that paid union wages of $30 on the outside.

Full article

Hmmm….under these circumstances, having a large slave, oops I mean prison population is advantageous. What an “original” idea!

Damn, it is one thing if this was about rehabilitation and helping people gain skills and get jobs when they leave prison. Maybe pocket away some money in an account for use when a man or woman gets out of prison. At least you could argue some type of “win/win” scenario. Investment firms like Fidelity Investments fund companies and organizations that administrate these types of “programs. I do not think that is what is going on here.

It is not clear to me, at all, that rehab and helping people get back into the workforce is what is intended or going on. I have a hard time believing that inmates net any money or receive developmental assistance that translates to smoother re-entry into non-prison life. My mind is open and I will keep researching, but this just sounds like re-legalized slavery to me.

Yes, and the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution clearly spells out the intention. It’s absolutely disgusting how comfortable our society has become with this. It’s sickening.

I fucking hate this country

I may get some hate-mail for my beliefs but I’m going to share them: I don’t think we are obligated to train prisoners or pay them wages for any work they do. If they make any money and the prison lets them keep it, that’s really charitable. They are already costing taxpayers TONS of money and they have committed crimes against us in the first place. Therefore, I think their wages should go to help cover some of the costs. Most of us don’t get free college or paid for internships, and definitely don’t get free housing and food. I know our prison system is far from perfect, but I also feel like the US is too lax in how violent criminals (serial killers, child molesters, rapists, etc.) are treated. We say “no cruel and unusual punishments” yet many times these people were exactly that towards their victims. It doesn’t seem fair to me.

I also understand we do have over-harsh/long sentences for drug possession versus financial crimes (which often cripple many people’s lives), so I do feel in other cases the sentences should be lessened. Overall though, I am not going to be upset that people in prison are getting paid anything at all for doing work they do.

You obviously have a problem with empathy. You’re making about 5 different false assumptions about WHO is in prison right now, and WHY they are there.

Obviously your apparent blind faith that people in prison are DEFINITELY GUILTY (of something, I’m sure), is incongruous with your observation (link to the Steubenville rapists lax sentence) that often SOME people receive overly LAX sentences.

Maybe you should be doing some reading about WHO EXACTLY is receiving overly LAX sentences, and WHO EXACTLY IS RECEIVING OVERLY HARSH sentences, and maybe then you’ll be able to make some goddamn sense of the world, instead of paying attention only to information that confirms shit you already decided was true.

And you should provably get all the facts on this before you start deciding shit about how prisoners are treated, since you obviously don’t know much about prisoners other than what your mama told you about “teh bad menz”.

“They are already costing taxpayers TONS of money and they have committed crimes against us in the first place.”

…we do all realize that people who receive prison sentences are taxpayers as well, yea?

and we do all realize that the whole reason we have things like “rights” and whatnot is because we believe people have them because they are human beings, and that they do not need to be earned or deserved.

the basic principal of our country (that we very rarely live up to) is that everyone has the same rights, whether other people think they deserve them or not.

Be careful thinking that the world is divided into “us” and “them”, turbulentbeauty. That is a dangerous society to live in. People in jail and people who commit crimes, even violent or horrific crimes, are not an entirely different breed of person than you and the people you know.

After my boss being too busy to meet with me for the past 3 months, and my list of issues we needed to talk about growing to epic proportions, he finally had time this morning to sit down and talk. Although it turns out there wasn’t much to talk about. We sat down, and he fired me.

At first, he tried to say it was because I had taken an employee’s tips (being the GM, I don’t take tips while working with hourly employees). However, he was talking about taking the tips while working with new employees going through training, WHICH HE HAD INSTRUCTED ME TO DO. So after I called his bullshit, he backtracked, and said that he had a few customers complain about my attitude. No specifics, mind you, just that a few customers didn’t like my attitude. He gave no warnings, no chances for me to amend my behavior, just a swift kick in the ass. I guess that was easier than going through the myriad problems he causes by being an incompetent boss.

So now I’m reaching out to friends in California, Colorado, and any where else, hoping to land a job and move in the near future. It’s time for a fresh start in a place that doesn’t rank at the top of the US Cities with the Worst Air Quality. Does anyone have any suggestions for a new home town?

thedailywhat:
